Epilepsy Research:
Neuropsychiatric and neurophysiologic assessment of social cognition before and after surgical treatment of intractable epilepsy:
- Heidi Kirsch, M.S., M.D. is currently directing a longitudinal research study that examines social functioning before and after surgery for intractable epilepsy. Subjects who participate undergo a series of tasks that test various aspects of social cognition, including recognizing and interpreting facial affect and emotional prosody, making social judgments, and identifying motives and emotional states of other people. This project will also measure changes in interpersonal and social function using various methods of psychosocial assessment, including observation of subject behavior as well as questionnaires and interviews of subjects and their caregivers. Magnetic source imaging and structural MRI will be used to interpret changes in social cognition in light of neuroanatomic and neurophysiologic changes due to surgery.
